The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any major awards ceremony approaches, you'll find an outcry to include additional classifications to recognize unsung work and delight the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, and you can find room for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
  • Just some logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
