The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Spurs extended their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent saves to ensure the London club went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing the match official to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's side into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton remain in 14th position and are half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils duties at each end of the field

After a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a mere two shots on target, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his next goal in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defence, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo handled superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have faded somewhat and supporters flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a major worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' two established strikers - had scored only one league goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having room and time to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, too, was unable to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped dangerous balls into the Spurs box.
