The United States central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the number of new jobs created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The figure of positions added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown
Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
